COVAS Showcase
Creativity abounds in Liz Fox’s “Exploring Form & Surface” ceramic exhibit.
A section of Fox’s showcase is a collection of embellishment techniques on clay sample tiles. The tiles include examples of sgaffito, stamping, carving, block printing, mishima, stenciling, sprigging, piercing, resists, underglaze transfers, cuerda seca, mocha diffusion and majolica. Fox is donating these tiles to the VAC’s Clay Studio for permanent display to be used as inspiration to students and as teaching references.
Liz Fox’s display also includes handbuilt forms, incorporating many of the techniques used in her tiles. Fox continues her explorative process of form in her platters, plates, mugs, sculptures, coat hangers and fonts. Her love for the natural world is undeniable as plants and animals are a constant theme in her vast assortment of forms and imagery. In this show alone, squirrels, otters, giraffes, woodpeckers, polar bears and kelp forms and images are all represented. Most of her pieces are functional and handbuilt using slab or coil techniques and fired in an electric kiln, but she is always exploring new techniques.
Fox has lived on the Oregon coast for most of her life and has a myriad of careers since graduating with a Soil Science degree from OSU in 1980. Retiring as a high school librarian in 2020, she’s been a full-time potter ever since, pursuing an interest she dabbled in for over 40 years.
