DONATE TO OCCA

For 15 years, the Nye Beach Banner Project has been celebrating Nye Beach as the ‘Art Heart’ of Newport, beautifying the coastal neighborhood and highlighting the creative talents of our community artists.

The Banner Project is a program of the Nye Beach Merchants Association. Every year, upwards of 40 different local artists volunteer their time to create one-of-a-kind works of art on canvas banners in order to be displayed throughout the Nye Beach area. At the end of the season – in November – an auction is held, with proceeds benefitting youth arts programs sponsored by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts.

The Association provides the banners for the artists, who donate their time and talents. They are encouraged to depict some element of Nye Beach — be it music, dance, acting, writing, art, architectural elements, natural elements — on one side; and on the other side, a quote that is thought-provoking or smile-inducing (or simply ‘Nye Beach’). Each year artists are also welcome to create their banner based on an additional, timely theme.

For the last few years, the project has participated in banner exchanges with Newport’s Sister City, in Mombetsu, Japan. The Banner Art Project helps to grow the connection between cities by trading Newport banners for Mombetsu banners.
