Embroidered Bindings
These sweet journals combine beautiful embroidery stitches with exposed binding. In this workshop, you will learn basic non-adhesive bookbinding techniques using surface embroidery stitches to create unique journals. Learning these sewing patterns will give students the knowledge and understanding to further explore other non-adhesive bindings. Your kit includes Mi-Tiente paper for the outer covers, DMC pearl cotton, a tool for creating the sewing holes and size 8 embroidery needles.

Students should bring: 48 sheets of text-weight paper, punching cradle (purchased, DIY, or old phone book), bone folder, craft cutting board, and an X-acto knife or rotary cutter to cut paper.

Celeste Chalasani is an award-winning designer and teacher specializing in Stumpwork.  She has taught extensively both in person and virtually for the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) at chapter workshops, regional and national seminars; the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN); other regional guilds; Quiltfest, Craftsy and North Redwood Book Arts Guild (NORBAG).  She is a graduate of the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) Teachers’ Certification program specializing in Stumpwork, where she also completed her Teach Cum Laude program combining embroidery and book arts.  Her piece “Tidal Treasures” was accessioned into the NAN Permanent Collection at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at North Carolina State University. Celeste currently serves as the Assistant Director of Teacher Certification at NAN.  She was also Director of Education for EGA from 2018-2021.
