Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sculpting a Bust, But Were Afraid to Ask
with Toby Larson

Come and experience the fun of working with clay! In this class, students will learn how to take a block of clay and work with it to push and form it into a bust using their hands and some basic tools. The instructor will share his techniques to achieve the expressive figures he creates mostly from his imagination, as seen in his show in the Covas Showcase gallery space here at the VAC in the fall of 2024. This class meets over three sessions so that each student can create a bust, glaze it, decorate it however they choose, and have it fired in the VAC kiln.

March 1-15
Saturdays from 1-4pm
Adults 18+

Toby Larson has spent his whole life doing art in some form or fashion; in high school, he was introduced to oil-based clay by his art teacher, and he was hooked! He spent the next two decades working on expressing himself through clay and fine-tuning his sculpting skills. His primary subject matter is figurative sculpting with an emphasis on faces which are sculpted mostly from his imagination. Once the piece has been fired in the kiln, he uses a process called sawdust firing, in which the piece is placed in a fire pit, covered with sawdust and other materials, and then set on fire, creating interesting marks and color shifts in the finished pieces. Toby’s style reflects a mixture of rough, aggressive sculpting textures, accompanied by the burns and scaring of the fire.
