Polly Plumb Productions presents “ Art Quilt Melange” a specially collated collection of the works of internationally acclaimed artist Hollis Chatelain, in the Yachats Commons , Sat. and Sunday , May 18 & 19, 10 AM – 4 PM. Admission is a suggested $7.00 donation. A Tea Service will be offered 12:00 – 3:00 PM each day.
Hollis Chatelain is a rock star of the Art Quilting world. It is said her work is “easy to gaze at, but hard to forget.” Chatelain says, “ Thread is my passion. My large pieces have as much as 25,000 yards and over 200 different colors of thread in them.” Twenty pieces are scheduled for display, ranging in sizes of 2’ X 2’ to 8’ X 6‘.
“This is a show unlike any other! We haven’t done one like this before!” said Yachats artist Ruth Bass. “We will get to see a rare version of Hollis” Bass gets credit for introducing the Art Quilt craze to Yachats. In March 2017, Polly Plumb Productions sponsored “ Ocean Artistry”, an international Art Quilt challenge, with generous cash prizes. The competition received more than 100 entries from 6 different countries. Bass said “ One of the goals of the show was to introduce art quilting to local residents, as well as visitors to the area. Art quilts do not typically follow the patterns used in traditional quilting. Instead, artists use fabric and other materials to build conceptual creations based on a theme, design or simply the artist’s imagination.” According to the Art Quilt Association club definition “An art quilt is an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than the handing down of a ‘pattern’. It experiments with textile manipulation, color, texture and/or a diversity of mixed media. An Art Quilt often pushes quilt world boundaries .”
Polly Plumb followed up with a 2017 showing of the International Art Quilt Challenge, “ World Heritage Sites” and a 2018 showing “ Stories of West Africa” by Hollis Chatelain, the first show by a single artist. The International Art Quilt Challenge,” Fariy Tales” was displayed in Oct. 2018.
Hollis Chatelain employs a dynamic and characteristic style, marked by dreamlike imagery, elaborate use of color, and intricate thread detail. Hollis creates unique compositions that address challenging social, environmental, and political themes. Her work is found in public and private collections around the world.
Afternoon Tea service will be available with beverages and delicacies from noon till 3 each day.
