Learn about and practice the particular structure of magazine writing. Identify those structural elements in current magazine stories as case examples. Define types of news and discover different magazine formats. Understand the growing popularity of long-form, enterprise journalism. Hear how to pitch stories, build relationships with publications and work with editors. Practice interviewing and research techniques. Receive a list of common publishing and design terms. Workshop is applicable to travel and blog writing as well.

Short writing projects are assigned between classes. Students should bring 2-3 current news magazine articles that they have recently read. Students should bring laptops or notebook and pens. Tom Webb is the former editor-in -chief of The Bear Deluxe Magazine, an award-winning environmental arts publication. He has served as an editor at Portland State University and led a magazine-development class (graduate level) at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.
