The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents the exhibition “Layered & Stitched: Selected Quilts from the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild” in the Upstairs Gallery. The exhibit includes work by 11 award-winning quilters and serves as a prequel to the guild’s 29th annual quilt show, Quilts by the Sea, held in Newport during the first week of August.

Participating quilters include Jean Amundson, Susan Cronenwett, Denise DeMarie, Karen Donobedian, Shirley Gilmore, Benita Goodheart, Linda Mac-Kown, Tina McCann, Judy McCoy, Jane Szabo, Janet Webster, and Gloria Zirges.

“Creating art quilts allows me to combine my love of fabric and ‘playing’ with fabric with my interest in art,” says Zirges. “My pieces are usually representational and based on a photograph. They tell a narrative that is important to me or demonstrate my love of the natural world.”

The guild was founded in 1991 to promote fellowship among quilters; to promote knowledge and appreciation of quilts and quilt making through educational programs and meetings; and to sponsor and support quilting activities. The guild currently has 190 members based primarily in Lincoln County. For more information, visit the guild’s website at oregoncoastalquilters.org.
