Anthony Minghella’s vividly cinematic staging returns to the big screen, featuring soprano Hui He in the devastating title role of “Madama Butterfly,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 9 at the Newport Performing Arts Center’s Alice Silverman Theatre. Screened live in HD from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, Puccini’s tale is hosted locally by Kathy Reed.
Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts one of opera’s most beautiful and heartbreaking scores, with a cast that also includes tenor Piero Pretti as Pinkerton, baritone Paulo Szot as Sharpless, and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong as Suzuki. Run time is approximately 3 hours and 25 minutes, with two intermissions; read a synopsis from the Met.
The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series is made possible by a generous grant from the Neubauer Family Foundation. OCCA thanks the Jeannette B. Hofer Fund at the Oregon Community Foundation, the City of Newport, season benefactors Bill and JoAnn Barton, opera hosts, OCCA members and local opera fans for their continuing support.
