The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents the 2018 Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival’s “Instructors’ Show” from March 9 to April 21 in the Newport Visual Arts Center’s Upstairs Gallery. Now in its 23rd, year, the Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival (NPBAF) is regarded as the largest paper arts festival on the Pacific Coast. In 2018, the festival will be held from April 20-22 and will include ten instructors leading 17 full-day workshops in fields such as surface design, book binding, assemblage and mixed media.

The NPBAF annually draws instructors and over 120 attendees from across the Western United States and beyond.

The NPBAF is known for the quality of its workshop leaders, and instructors are selected for their background and expertise in specific book-art fields.

“We are once again excited to showcase the talents of these award-winning book and paper artists at the VAC,” says OCCA VAC director Tom Webb. “And to bring many of to Newport from across the Pacific Northwest.”

John N. Arbuckle is a Pacific Northwest mixed media and collage artist who has been teaching for over 40 years and has been selected for many Northwest Collage Society art shows. \

Doris Arndt has been an artist/instructor for over 40 years and has been published in magazines such as Rubber Stamp Madness, Cloth Paper Scissors, and Somerset Studio.

Patricia Edmonds loves teaching advanced structures and decorative paper techniques. Her students range from grade school through college students.

Glenda Goodrich has taught mixed media and collage classes at Chemeketa Community College, Keizer Art Association, Currents Gallery, Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, the Newport Paper Arts Festival, and the Runaway Art & Craft Studio. Patricia Grass has taught book binding for 30 years through the Artist in Education Program, Pacific University, and Portland Community College. She authored the book, How To Make A Book Even If You Think You Can’t.

Dolores Guffey is a founding member of the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild. She has taught workshops for NORBAG and other guilds in California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, and at the Focus on Book Arts Conference and the Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival.

Margo Klass is an active member of the Northwoods Book Arts Guild in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2015, she received the Alaska Governor’s Individual Artist Award. Her work can be found in the collections of museums throughout Alaska, national parks and in private collections.

Moe Snyder is an accomplished book and box artist often combining the two structures. Her work combines structure and the mark-making of calligraphy with a love of nature and the search for home.

Jill Timm is a full-time, award-winning book artist focusing on small editions of hand-crafted books. Her work appears in many corporate, university, and public and private collections across the United States and Canada.

Jackie Wygant comes from a family of artists and found her niche in the book arts in the late 1980s. Her artist books have been included in numerous exhibitions.

A reception for the 2018 Instructors’ Show will be held on Friday, April 20, 5-7pm, at the VAC (777 NW Beach  Dr.), and the public is invited to attend. The Upstairs Gallery is open noon to 4pm, Tuesday-Saturday.
