K-L Bindings
We will create a highly functional book using a traditional “Langstitch/Kettenstitch” binding—long stitches down the spine and link stitches at head and tail. This binding pattern supports a structure that is flexible, strong, and permits the book to lay flat when open, making it perfect for writing, drawing, and adding photos. Using fine papers throughout, we will embellish and personalize our cover with a range of materials attached in various ways. This book provides an opportunity to incorporate some of your own embellished papers.

Students should bring: A bookbinding awl, bone or teflon folder, bone scorer, X-Acto knife with extra blades and scissors, Small needle nose pliers – inner edges flat (not ridged or with teeth), a cutting mat – 18 x 24 (24-36 maximum), rulers – 2″ & 3″ wide 18″ long, glue stick, pencil, and eraser.

Optional (but useful) items students may also bring: Metal edges. Piercing cradle. Embellishing materials for cover: natural objects (e.g. small rocks, shells, leaves, twigs).
