Newport, Oregon, August 21, 2019 – New Visions Arts and Oregon Coast Council for the Arts are welcoming a playful pooka to the Newport Performing Arts Center as the One Night Delights hit series continues. A staged reading of the classic comedy, Harvey, will be on stage in the David Ogden Stiers Theatre on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Pulitzer Prize Winner, Harvey, is a classic comedy written by Mary Coyle Chase, an American journalist, playwright and children’s novelist. The 1944 Broadway play was adapted for film in 1950 starring James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, Josephine Hull as his sister Veta Louise Dowd Simmons and of course Harvey, as himself. Ms. Hull received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Veta. The play was revived on Broadway in 2012 starring Jim Parsons, which speaks to its ability to charm, entertain and enlighten audiences for 75 years!
This enduring play focuses on Elwood and his good friend Harvey, a six-and-a-half-foot rabbit, that only Elwood can see! His sister’s decision to have him committed to a sanitarium creates a variety of comic complications and mistaken identities that will leave the audience both laughing, yet wondering……….
This reading is presented as part of the ongoing One Night Delights reader’s theatre series presented by the OCCA and four local theatre companies (Coastal Act Productions, New Visions Arts, Porthole Players, and Red Octopus Theatre Company). All proceeds support an ongoing fundraising effort to renovate the David Ogden Stiers Theatre at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
Reader’s Theatre is a proud American tradition. The absence of elaborate sets and costumes puts the focus on the performers’ oral interpretation of the words, making this a fabulous way to truly savor a playwright’s work – and a tasty refreshment at intermission!
Admission to Harvey is only $15 (plus ticketing fees) and includes the added delight of an invisible carrot cake made by one of Harvey’s friends, of course.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 541-265-ARTS, online at www.coastarts.org, or by visiting the PAC box office during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The series concludes on October 9, with The Land Southward, written by our very own Darcy Hogan of Red Octopus Theatre Company. In 2005, the Orange County Weekly named The Land Southward the Best New Play.
