“Jazz in the Afternoon,” the fourth session of the Oregon Coast Jazz Party, opens at 1:45 p.m. with an “Invite, Include, Inspire” set with Holly Hofmann on flute, Roxy Coss on flute, soprano and tenor saxes, Ken Peplowski on clarinet and tenor sax, pianist Mike Wofford, Nicki Parrott on bass and vocals, and drummer Matt Wilson, featuring this year’s award-winning middle school student from southern California, Nick Caldwell on tenor sax.
Next up is “Terell Stafford Salutes the Legendary Jazz Trumpeters” at 2:45 p.m., with Stafford leading an ensemble of guitarist Larry Koonse, pianist Randy Porter, bassist Dave Captein, and drummer Lewis Nash.
Rounding out the session at 3:45 p.m., revered tenor sax-man Houston Person leads “The Great Love Songs,” backed by Dena DeRose on piano and vocals, Nicki Parrott on bass and vocals, and drummer Gary Hobbs.
Presented by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, this session of the jazz party features reserved seating in the Alice Silverman Theatre at the Newport Performing Arts Center, equipped with the Meyer Constellation system’s superb acoustics.
