Tea and Talk events, organized by Coastal Arts Guild, are informal afternoon gatherings for anyone curious about art and artists. Learn about inspiration, techniques, materials, and more from practicing artists. Free and open to all, held on the 2nd floor of Newport Visual Arts Center.

This month’s event will feature Abelina Paablo: Paablo started weaving traditional Mayan textiles at a very young age. Her mother and grandmother passed on this tradition to her. Most of the patterns and colors are combinations of designs that are kept in her memories. The materials have to be purchased and mailed all the way from her homeland, “Todos Santos, Guatemala.” To weave a handbag could take up to 2 months. Thousands of feet colorful lana wool are used to create beautiful and unique art pieces. Abelina will demonstrate her backstrap weaving technique and share examples of her work.
