Spirits of Sylvia Beach takes place at the hotel of the same name just down the road from the Newport Performing Arts Center. Written by local author and Porthole Board member Jennifer Chaney, this farce follows Lucy, a writer who works at the hotel and is visited by the spirits that dwell within. The play will be performed the first three weekends in September 2024 in the David Ogden Stiers black box auditorium, inside the Newport Performing Arts Center.
AGATHA CHRISTIE, spirit of the British Detective Novelist – F, 60 – 80 (British accent)
VIRGINIA WOOLF, spirit of the English Author – F, 30 – 50 (British accent)
GERTRUDE STEIN, spirit of the American Writer & Poet – F, 50 – 70 (is incredibly snarky)
JANE AUSTEN – spirit of the English Novelist – F, 30 – 40 (British accent)
EDGAR ALLAN POE – spirit of the American Writer, Poet & Literary Critic – M, 30 – 40 (Georgia accent)
LUCY – F, perky and cheerful hotel attendant who wants to be a writer, 20 – 40
DINO – Ghost Hunter, any, 20 – 40 (takes on Rocker Goth persona, very over the top)
SIDNEY TORRANCE – Ghost Hunter, any gender, 20 – 40 (takes on Victorian Goth)
LORRAINE (voice, double role) – F, any age
*This is a sincere comedy with many special effects, based on real historical figures. Seeking actors with strong comedic timing skills. Lucy hums (it doesn’t have to be good) and Agatha sings opera very well (mezzo soprano.) Poe and Jane briefly tango. Period costumes and special effect makeup will be utilized.
