Two local emerging Indigenous artists collaborate together, in a contemporary show that includes photography, film, sculpture, and installation components.

Harmon, a contemporary mixed-media artist, comes from a long line of creators and craftsmen. And while he draws inspiration from his ancestors and Tribe, he is primarily self-taught. His inaugural solo exhibition took place in the VAC’s upstairs gallery in April and May of 2023.

Curiosity about self, land, and people led Butler to photography a decade ago. His sophisticated and often mysterious compositions explore the duality of light and shadow. Butler is the recipient of the 2024 Indigenous Place Keeping Artist Fellowship.

Celebrating the next generation of Indigenous creators, five emerging artists come together in Where Waters Meet

Flowing from diverse backgrounds and tribes, these artists meet at the Newport Visual Arts Center and Performing Arts Center Galleries this summer, showcasing photography, videography, installation, painting, and basketry. Honoring heritage while establishing new paths of contemporary expression, Leonard Harmon, Leland Butler, Isabella Saavedra, Chantele Rilatos, and Booker Bartow open the door to rich perspectives in four exciting exhibits. CLICK TO LEARN MORE
