Visible Mending for Woven Items
with Emy Daniels
Saturday, February 1, 1-4pm
Adults & Youth 14+ (with adult)
$50 (mending materials provided)

Learn a variety of hand stitching techniques, including an introduction to the Japanese Sashiko style, using embroidery floss and thread to close up holes in woven fabrics and other cloth like material. Learn, too, to combine stitches to create embellishments. Show off your mending with color choices and artistic style to show the world you’re giving your clothes a longer life while keeping them out of the landfill! This is a beginner-friendly class, but some experience with hand stitching will be helpful.

Deadline to register: January 30

Please bring a clean woven/cloth item to mend (e.g. denim, most clothing except knitted (t-shirts ok), canvas bags, etc.). Consider mending a loved one’s item as a gift! Optional: Bring extra fabric to fill holes for patching – salvaging well-loved old clothing and fabrics works great! Embroidery hoop also optional. A selection of fabric, embroidery floss and thread will be provided by the instructor.

Emy Daniels is a visual artist interested in the intersection of art, science and community activism. Visible mending is a trend she embraces to reclaim slow fashion and environmental responsibility toward our clothing choices. She is interested in fiber arts at large and has learned all the steps from shearing sheep to knitting garments.

This class is part of FIBER FEST, running January 11 to March 1, 2025 – celebrating fiber arts and artists with exhibits, demonstrations, and classes throughout two buildings and across four galleries.
