The Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival, one of Oregon’s and the country’s most successful educational public high school classical music arts programs is held every year in Newport. This enormously successful state-wide youth classical musical event is the only one of its kind in the entire United States. The mission of the Festival is to enhance the quality of life for Oregon’s youth by providing the opportunity to learn and perform orchestral music together in a collaborative environment. The Festival is not a competition. This year’s Festival will be held in the Newport Middle School gymnasium on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at 7:00p.m.

The Festival features six Oregon high school string orchestras, plus a university orchestra, coming to Newport for three days of workshops, instructional sessions, mentoring and free public concerts featuring the all the orchestras. This year’s participants are high school orchestras from South Eugene, McNary (Keizer), Caldera (Bend), Grants Pass, Klamath Falls and Pendleton. Special guest performing Friday night is the Drake University Chamber Orchestra from De Moines, Iowa. Saturday night’s grand finale features all 150 students playing in one mass orchestra. The high school orchestras will be performing both nights.

This year’s lead clinician and mass orchestra conductor is Adam Flatt, Music Director and Conductor of the Newport Symphony Orchestra (pictured). Joining him will be Dr. Mark Laycock, Director of Orchestras at Wichita State University.
