Cyanotype Basics with Botanicals
with LaRaye Rushing
Adults (or youth 14+ with adult)

Capture the power of the sun to make images of plants with one of the original photographic processes called cyanotype! Also known as sun prints or blueprints, these stunningly beautiful images are easy to create and last a lifetime. We will learn how to coat cyanotype paper and make contact prints using pressed plants. Bring flowers from your favorite farmer’s market flower farm, pick some flowers or leaves from your backyard, or experiment with some of the provided plant materials. We will cover the basics of cyanotype printing, plant preparation and selection, and creating the final print with the sun. Students will leave this class with a unique series of botanical prints as well as having dabbled in science, photography, and art all at the same time.

All skill levels are welcome!

About the instructor:
LaRaye Rushing is a Lincoln City graphic artist and printmaker inspired by her home on the Oregon Coast. She has a BBA in Accounting from Angelo State University and a BS in Digital Arts and Design from Full Sail University. After a successful career as a graphic designer for several nonprofits, she transitioned to an active printmaking practice in 2020. She has shown her work in local galleries and participated in many local art markets. Her practice consists of botanical cyanotypes and monoprints using locally foraged plants. She loves all elements of printmaking and experimenting with each medium including using her own handmade paper for monoprinting. See more of her work at heylaraye.com.
