Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival
Storage Book
Designed to hold ephemera, Hedi Kyle calls this structure her Storage Book. Its framed, window-like pages are made of double layers of mylar which hold their contents in place so that both fronts and backs are visible. The central images of the entire text block form an overlapping, composite image when the book is viewed as a codex structure. When the structure is fanned opened around its spine, the images magically become individual, floating compositions. Soft covers with an attached title plate on the front and an optional colophon inside the back complete the structure.
Students should bring: Ephemera or other content for text block pages (papers, threads, lace, seeds, feathers, anything small, thin, and delicate). Cutting mat (minimum 18 x 24”). Cutting knife (with fresh blade). Teflon bone folder. Graduated metal edges. Tweezers (Small triangle or square tipped). Micro metal spatula. See-through plastic rulers – various widths and lengths. Scissors, pencil, eraser. PVA in jar (small amount). Glue brush ~1/2” diameter. Glue sheets. Water jar.

Margo Klass is a mixed media sculptor whose work includes constructions and artist books. In both, natural and found objects are springboards for content, often narrative but always symbolic of meaning beyond what the objects suggest. Aesthetically she draws from her study of medieval art and travel in Japan. She has received awards from the Rasmuson Foundation and Alaska State Council on the Arts. In 2015 she received the Governor’s Individual Artist Award. Her work is in the Alaska State Museum, Anchorage Museum, University of Alaska Museum of the North, Pratt Museum, and other public and private collections. margoklass.com
