Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival
Japanese Stab Binding Book with Hand-Carved Stamps
Beginners and seasoned artists alike will enjoy this “eraser” carving class. We will begin the class discussing basic block carving techniques and designing our hand carved stamps. Students will carve their stamps and then create prints using various inks and papers. In the afternoon we will work on creating small books to capture the best prints students have made using a Japanese Stab Binding technique with Chiyogami papers and other fine art papers inside the books.

Students should bring: Apron, shop towel, an awl, cutting mat, ruler, exacto knife, bone folder, scissors. Please bring your favorite lino cutting tools if you have them. The instructor will have tools for loan or purchase for those who don’t have one.

Laura Mitchell began her love of bookbinding in 1992 during a trio to Nahcotta, WA where she met Denise DeMarie who was making handmade paper and rustic books. Laura served as the treasurer for the Focus on Book Arts conference for about 20 years as well as taught at the conferences over the years. She has broadened her use of materials in bookbinding to include polymer clay, encaustic was, etched metal, glass, and fine hardwoods. Laura has also been an instructor at the Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival in the past.
