Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival
Deep Dive into Collage – Using Book Parts and Embellishments
Let’s take a deep dive into collage during this two-day workshop. Our first day will focus on dismantling old worn-out hardback books to scavenge for materials: book linen, interesting spines with gauze and gluey bits, not to mention fun illustrations and fancy text. We will also be ripping apart old paperbacks (the older the better) and altering the covers with sandpaper and cutting out blocks of text. We will spend the afternoon creating collages using our stacks and piles of book parts. On the second day, students will continue to work with book scraps, along with ephemera, collage materials, and embellishments you bring as well as what Dayna provides. At the end of two days, you will leave with several completed collages on both book boards and on 5×7 pieces of mat board. During the workshop, we will discuss collecting materials; composition and design elements; the importance of color and value; explore a variety of techniques, and how to display completed collages. There will be demos with plenty of time for hands on experimentation. An abundance of materials will be provided, along with tools and supplies to share.

Students should bring: 5 old hardback books (the more worn and wonky, the better) to be pulled apart and cut up, 3 old vintage paperback books (to be cut up and altered), Golden Semi-Gloss Soft Gel (8 oz.), Paper cutting scissors, Brayer (can be hard or soft), ¾” or 1” flat brush, X-acto knife with fresh blade, Magazine or catalog to use as “glue” paper, Apron, Baby wipes, Wax paper, Water container. An assortment of collage papers: book pages, preprinted tissue paper, handmade paper pieces, vintage handwritten letters, typewritten pages, sheet music, old newspaper clippings. Personal embellishments: Feathers, bits of quilt, old key, old sewing items, buttons, ticket stubs, numbers, etc. Keep these items fairly lightweight. Optional: Assortment of old black and white photos (can be family members or strangers), tiny to medium sized. (Photos for everyone to use will be provided by the instructor.)  Cutting mat, Fine tipped black and white Posca pens, 5-lb.bag of rice.

Dayna Collins’ fiery red hair sets the tone for how she makes her art and lives her life. She is an energetic, intuitive, abstract painter working in oil and cold wax, and a collagist working with scavenged book scraps, faded fragments of ephemera, and contemporary hand-painted papers. Dayna teaches throughout the Pacific Northwest, including annually at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon coast, and has taught through the Creative Arts Community at Menucha Conference and Retreat Center in the Columbia Gorge. Dayna shows her art at Guardino Gallery in Portland and RiverSea Gallery in Astoria, and her work can be viewed at two regional boutique hotels, The Independence and The Dundee. Her work can be seen in several published books, including “Art for Everyone,” “Wabi-Sabi Painting with Oil and Cold Wax,” “Art Abandonment,” “The Mixed-Media Artist,” and “Cold Wax Medium.” She splits her time between Salem and Astoria, where her house has been dubbed “The House of Color.”
