Yakona – Beginning Gel Plate Printing with Nature

at Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center
Using a synthetic gel plate, we will use both natural and man-made objects to create prints. We will be using acrylic paint and each student will have a gel plate and lots of paper to work with. There is no need for prior art experience with this technique. It is a fun and approachable process that both adults and youth can enjoy.
All class materials will be provided. We will be using botanicals to create prints. Students can bring their own from their garden if they would like to. Please bring a hat, layers, comfortable shoes, snacks, and water. Please note: There IS a bathroom and shelter at the preserve, but there is no running water, garbage collection, or electricity.
To help ensure an enjoyable experience for all, we kindly encourage guests to attend fragrance-free in support of those with allergies and sensitivities.

Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center was created to restore native coastal forest on Oregon’s Yaquina Bay. Located in South Beach, Oregon, it is a living laboratory that serves to protect, preserve, and enhance the natural ecosystems and cultural history of Oregon’s central coast spruce habitat and its wildlife through the arts, education, and stewardship. About the instructor:
Jill Marks began printmaking in 2016, when she learned the art of Gyotaku (Japanese fish printing) from Heather Fortner. Jill’s art has expanded since then to include gelli plate printing, eco printing, and lino-cut printmaking. She enjoys utilizing natural botanicals in her artwork and hopes to inspire an appreciation and sense of stewardship toward nature and our environment through her work.
