Join us for a hands-on class all about Persicaria or Japanese indigo! Indigo is one of the world’s natural sources of color fast true blue. In this class participants will explore the art and tradition of natural dyeing and learn about the extraction and uses of this natural pigment.
During the 4-hour workshop the instructor will guide you through three processes of working with the indigo plant, fresh leaf dyeing, obtaining stable pigment, and preparing pigment for making paint. The participants will start by working on a fresh leaf dying project with silk handkerchiefs and chopped up leaf matter. Next, they will move on to prepping fresh leaves for fermentation to get the pigment out. Finally, they will learn how to work with the extracted pigment and blend with gum arabic to make watercolor paint.
All essential materials will be provided. Come ready to create, experiment, and leave with hand-made watercolor paint and a beautiful hand-dyed silk handkerchief along with a deeper appreciation for this timeless craft.
All skill levels welcome
