Talk About Art

Nature photographer Andree Devine addresses “The Creative Process and Photography” during the next Coastal Arts Guild Talk About Art, Thursday, October 15 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Newport Visual Art Center. Devine will focus on how she shifted her mindset behind the camera from that of being a literal “documentarian,” to learning to approach photography with more artistic intent.
Devine started her formal photographic training in an unusual classroom: under the sea. Seeing all the beauty emerging before her, she had to overcome the urge to record every animal and scene in front of the camera and instead make deliberate image capture choices. She learned to slow down, take the time to observe behaviors and patterns, and pay close attention to the natural light and other conditions present in the aquatic environment. These became the same principles that she applies to her topside photography.
Devine feels that art and photography parallel each other in that they are rooted in creativity and expression. Using some of her favorite images, Devine will share the stories behind their capture, and the creative choices made in the moment or in “the digital darkroom.” Her presentation will not be a “how to” about photography, but rather a story about intent, choices and creating meaningful images.
