As stated on a tile at the Newport Skate Park, “Skateboarding is like Jazz, pure American culture”. The Lincoln City Cultural Center is proud to present “SKART” a sk8board art show at the Chessman Gallery.

Artists that flip, spin and grind will be displaying an eye-popping and diverse collection of artwork, from sculpture to paintings and from pen and ink drawings to photography. All of the artists involved in this show either grew up skateboarding here in Lincoln City or moved here to be near Lincoln City’s destination skate park, created by Dreamland Skateparks. The Lincoln City skate park was on the cover of Thrasher magazine as “Americas Gnarliest Skatepark” in 99’ and remains a Skateboarding Mecca.

One such artist who moved west to experience the skate scene on the Oregon Coast is Kat Iwasa. She has traveled to skateboard all over the US and parts of Canada before settling here 6 years ago. Iwasa, who will be displaying ball point pen drawings, prints and surreal, acrylic paintings at the show, said skaters tend to be artists because they think outside the box, seeing the world from a different perspective.

The show will also feature local skater Sarah Scanlan, who works with collage, wax and oil paint to create rich and unique paintings that are usually inspired by people. She attended the Art Program at Southern Oregon University and is presently working on a series of paintings that will be based on people of the skate park.

The photography of Micheal Walty and the woodwork of Tavita Scanlan will also be in the show. Scanlan is an original builder for the Dreamland Skatepark Company and continues to help them build skateparks all over the world.

Drew Banks is another local skater who will be in the show. He uses actual skateboards to make his functional skateboard art. Both colorful and creative, his work is a must see. Other guests to the show will be Trevor Clark and Rachel Hunter, both of which grew up skating in the area and now live in Portland. Clark does surrealist oil paintings and drawings, and Hunter makes sharpie marker drawings and prints. This “SKART” Show promises to be an outpouring of local skateboard culture as well as a fantastic art event.
