Inspired by geometry, color, and design, Sam Jacobson creates hand-built, functional ceramics using whimsical patterns, bold color combinations, and unique forms. Her work stands in stark contrast to the potential banality of everyday practical items, and is, as she puts it, “a welcome antidote to the gray, rainy days of winter at the coast.”
Working with slabs, rather than the wheel, from a studio nestled in the forest on Cascade Head, Jacobson’s creations are more sculptural in nature. Her adventurous designs are inspired by her travels, life experiences, and the environment in which she lives, as well as creatures and personalities – known or imagined.
“I love how Sam’s work incorporates the sharing of a feeling or mood,” said Chasse Davidson, director of the Newport Visual Arts Center. ” She is so successful in translating an element of fun into her work — delivering a sense of playfulness through very structured, precise design and pattern execution.”
Sam will give an in-person clay demonstration on Saturday, March 9th at 2pm on the 2nd floor of the Newport Visual Arts Center.
Sam Jacobson’s work has been shown in juried shows, including Face to Face, Chessman Gallery (2019, Lincoln City, OR); Wildwomen, River Gallery (2020, Independence, OR); Have We Met? Newport Visual Arts Center (2021, Newport, OR); and Strictly Functional National Pottery Show, Pennsylvania Museum of Art (2021, Lancaster, PA).
