Clearcut Oregon is a series of oil on canvas aerial landscape paintings depicting forest practices on actual places in Western Oregon—not invented locations. The paintings are named after the county where the aerial view was derived.
“The Clearcut Oregon series is meant to invoke dialogue about a way of logging that shows no signs of going away. Clearcuts are visually striking and, for the public, polarizing. For this exhibit I have chosen to show real landscape views where I see striking lines, squares, and other shapes imposed over natural patterns of terrain.” –David Mayfield
David has been exhibiting his art in western Oregon for 16 years. Paintings from the Clearcut Oregon series have been shown three times in Portland and also in Milwaukie, Salem, and Corvallis. In recent years, David has participated in shows at the Maude Kerns Gallery (Eugene), the River Gallery (Independence), the Newport Visual Arts Center, the Corvallis Art Center, the Pegasus Gallery (Corvallis), and the Guistina Gallery (Corvallis). Prior to moving to Corvallis, most of David’s exhibits were in the Portland area—for example, the 12X16 Gallery (Sellwood), the In Boca al Lupo Gallery (Oregon City), The Sierra Club (Portland), the City Halls of Oregon City and Milwaukie, Wine 30 (Milwaukie), and numerous medical and office buildings in Clackamas County via the Clackamas County Arts Alliance.
David studied art at UC Santa Barbara, Goddard College, and Sonoma State University. He holds a Master of Arts in Cultural Ecology from San Francisco State University.
