Traditional Guatemalan Woven Textiles
Free demo led by Abelina Pablo
Saturday, January 18th from 2-4pm
Travel to Guatemala’s markets and you might catch a glimpse of their exquisite textiles, which boast beautiful patterns in bold colors. But did you know? Weaving is not just a signature Guatemalan handicraft, it’s a tradition that spans generations and goes back thousands of years!
Abelina Pablo Perez started weaving traditional Mayan textiles at a very young age. Her mother and grandmother passed on this tradition to her. Most of the patterns and colors are combinations of designs that are kept in her memory. During the demonstration Abelina will show you how Sedalina and thousands of colorful lana wool strands are used to create beautiful and unique art pieces.
This demonstration is part of FIBER FEST, running January 11 to March 1, 2025 – celebrating fiber arts and artists with exhibits, demonstrations, and classes throughout two buildings and across four galleries.
