Beginning Drawing
with Carol Shenk

This six-week course will provide a friendly environment in which students can begin learning to draw what they see. We will employ both traditional drawing exercises and experimental approaches, and we will consider basic drawing concepts such as space, weight, line, perspective, shadow, movement, and composition.

Looking at examples from the art of diverse eras and cultures, we will discuss how we perceive, interpret, and choose to represent the world around us.  We will consider what it means to “get it right” and the roles personal expression and curiosity play in representational drawing. We will work mostly from still life and will venture into portraits and possibly other subjects, depending on students’ interests. We will experiment with media, using different types of pencil, charcoal, pens, ink and paper. (Optional – you can bring any charcoal, pencils, erasers and other drawing tools you like to experiment with)

This workshop is designed to be a welcoming space in which everyone can explore and learn from one another.  Absolute beginners are welcome, as are artists who are confident in other media but who would like to improve their drawing skills.

Ages: Ages 16+ (or 13+ with a participating adult)
Cost: $215 (includes paper and all drawing tools.)
