Textile Origami
with Kristine Berg
In this class students will be exploring the technique of fabric manipulation which the instructor refers to as textile origami. Like origami, it begins with a grid, but the texture and patterns occur with a simple technique of hand sewing. The results are reminiscent of land forms, wave ripples, basketry, etc. They look magical and complicated but are simple and deeply satisfying. Very little sewing experience is needed.
Participants will receive one-on-one instruction in how to create a grid and interpret a pattern. They will use hand sewing to create a beautiful texture, and can use the piece to create home decor items, garments or an art piece. Please plan on bringing one yard each of two types of fabric in a solid color. Fabric can be linen, silk, cotton, polyester, wool, velvet, satin, or taffeta.
