Part of
David Fish – in Retrospect
This two part* exhibition brings deserved attention to the Newport-based artist (1948-1995) whose work was well-recognized in western Oregon through the 1970&80’s and has continued, still, since his passing.

This exhibition presents an overview of David Fish’s drawings: early, in-progress studies in ink, or ink with watercolor lead us to the keenly observed pen and ink renderings of Oregon’s coastal terrain, for which he is well-recognized. The linear and tonal range of Fish’s works on paper invite us for a closer look: in some instances, distant wind-swept pines offered a natural backdrop, allowing the artist to bring his—and our—attention to what his eye encountered most immediately, to then recall in detail and patiently replicate.

At times, the modest paper seems to surge to near-capacity: Fish pauses at a tumble of sand-crusted rocks and polished shells; elsewhere, hatched lines acknowledge salt-weathered buildings along Yaquina Bay’s dock-side. In a late drawing, Fish’s vision shifts from the horizon-line to a synthesis of verticality: in Merge, pounding waves surge below a densely hatched night-forest, organizedby a gleaming star-paired-grid.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 2nd from 2-4pm
All are welcome; admission is free.

David Fish graduated with the class of 1968, Newport High School, where he furthered his interest in drawing and graphic arts as a student of Newell G. Murri. He was a pivotal figure in the community of independent artists and artisan silversmiths who worked collectively at the Hilan Castle in Newport, to produce scrimshaw for Many Feathers Trading Company, founded by Tree Many Feathers in 1975. Fish developed the company’s brand-logo and led the Scrimshaw Department for two years.
