Pinch, Pull, and Coil:
An Intro to Hand Building Ceramics

Beginners to intermediate
Come take a tour through ceramic techniques in this 5-week introductory class! We’ll start by making pinch pots to learn the basic properties of clay and get comfortable playing with mud! We will then move on to building up forms with coils. Finally, we will make functional pieces using slabs of clay. This class will be geared towards beginners, with optional projects available for more experienced students. Students will leave the class with several clay creations glazed and fired, as well as the foundational knowledge to continue exploring the world of clay. All materials will be provided.
Since the clay pieces created during the course may need time to dry and be fired after the class is finished, we will run them through our kiln and will notify students when they are ready. They will be available for pickup during the VAC’s regular open hours. Please allow up to 2 weeks for the clay to dry and be fired before they will be ready for pickup.

About the instructor: Callum grew up in Lingit Aani up in Juneau Alaska and has been playing with clay for 10 years. After completing his BASc on the land of the Squamish Nation in British Columbia, they moved to Newport with their partner and their kitty. Having grown up fishing, foraging, sea kayaking, and tide pooling, their work is frequently inspired by the ecology of the PNW. Brimming with enthusiasm for the medium, he can’t wat to get his hands dirty and share the joy of making ceramics!
