Block to Paper – Hand-Printed Art

Explore the rewarding and fun art of block printing! This beginner-friendly class will guide students step by step through designing, carving, and hand-printing their own original block. We’ll start with the basics of creating a design that works well for block printing, considering positive/negative space, mirror image, and relief. Once ready, you will transfer and carve your design onto a “speedy carve block”. We’ll also practice different ways to ink and print your block so you can use it to create dazzling art prints or greeting cards – perfect for gifting, sharing, or keeping for yourself. The emphasis is on process over perfection, with plenty of room to experiment and enjoy making with your hands. Participants will go home with a block and at least two prints.
This class is for everybody, from complete beginners to experienced carvers and artists

About the instructor: Cheryl Horton is based in Newport, OR where she is inspired daily by the wildlife and ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. She believes wholeheartedly that art is for everyone and must be accessible to all members of our community. While she dabbles in a variety of mediums and enjoys trying new techniques, Cheryl has been captivated by printmaking since 2020! As one of the first cohort in the Visual Art Center’s Teaching Artist Program, Cheryl has refined her teaching skills and looks forward to sharing approachable classes in a welcoming and supportive environment.
