Runyan Gallery
Newport Visual Arts Center

Becky Miller’s oil paintings of botanicals, particularly kelp, are a unique blend of realism and abstraction that combine her love for detail, design, and flowing lines with her love of the natural world.

Opening reception: Friday, June 13, 5-7pm (featuring light refreshments, music, and an artist talk at 5:30pm)

Becky Miller has been obsessed with creating art for as long as she can remember. She spent two years as an art major studying painting and drawing under landscape painter Roger Blum and design, composition and art history under John Carstens at Pacific Union College. She also studied the human figure for several years at Hipbone Studio in Portland, Oregon under Jeff Burke. Additional mentorship came from her mother-in-law, well-known Western artist Vel Miller, and from Toledo, Oregon artists Douglas Haga, Michael Gibbons, and Ivan Kelly. In 2010, Becky entered her first four kelp paintings in the 2010 Celebrate Arts show in Florence, Oregon. All four pieces won awards. She subsequently was juried into The Artist’s Vision: A Juried Exhibit, part of the Lake Oswego, Oregon Festival of the Arts in the summer of 2011, where she won an Honorable Mention.

“I have always known I am an artist. My mother joked that my obsession with drawing began as soon as I was old enough to hold a pencil. Making art is all I have ever wanted to do with my life.”
