Beginning Papermaking
An introduction to making handmade paper. Participants will learn the basic skills of how to make handmade paper from recycled materials. Participants will make paper using a mold and deckle and dry paper by the restraint method on plexiglass. Participants will come away from this class having made several types of paper and having learned the skills to make paper at home on their own. Participants will experiment with several techniques for embellishing handmade paper, both in the vat and after they have formed a sheet of paper. Participants will experiment with flower and plant inclusions, lamination, and stencils.

Students can bring: Students can bring texture to imprint the paper while wet. Students can also bring inclusions to put in/embed in their paper such as flowers, leaves, glitter, feathers, etc. that they think will make their paper special to them. Oregon-based artist Jennifer Galvin reclaims discarded materials and gives them new life—old t-shirts, jeans, and matboard are transformed into intricate works of art. Jennifer has been making paper since 2002 and has a degree in art from Oregon State University. Her love for making paper has gradually evolved to painting with paper—pulp painting. As the pulp becomes the painting, it is transformed into something entirely new—something beautiful out of what was once discarded. Jennifer loves the hope that comes from giving objects a second life—seeing promise in the forgotten, hope from hopelessness. Jennifer Galvin has 25+ years of experience in art instruction. Jennifer has taught art to people of all ages in printmaking, papermaking, and painting. Jennifer’s pulp paintings have been shown regionally, nationally, and internationally, and have won several awards in National Juried Exhibitions. She is a member of IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists), NAHP (North American Hand Papermakers), TAC (The Arts Center, Corvallis, OR), and her work is shown at Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center in Clifton, Forge, The Arts Center in Corvallis, OR, and Art in the Valley Gallery, Corvallis, OR.
