Following his smash-hit debut with The Hours, composer Kevin Puts brings his Pulitzer Prize–winning first opera, inspired by the true events of the 1914 Christmas truce. During this historic event, soldiers spontaneously set aside the horrors of the First World War. They crossed the trenches to mingle, exchange gifts, and sing carols with the enemy. The piece offers a poignant depiction of shared humanity in inhumane circumstances. Puts’s grand, cinematic opera features a libretto by Mark Campbell, based on the film Joyeux Noël.
Silent Night receives an evocative staging by James Robinson. His production takes the audience directly to the battlefields of the Western Front. Debuting maestro Dalia Stasevska conducts the star-studded cast live from the Met to cinemas worldwide. The performance features soprano Elza van den Heever alongside tenors Ben Bliss and Rolando Villazón.
