Cheryl Horton, scientist and artist, will discuss how her love for nature and the study of the out of doors led to a passion for making art at March’s Talk About Art, sponsored by the Coastal Arts Guild.
Cheryl’s academic background is in wildlife biology and natural resources. She studied seabirds, shorebirds, and nearshore ocean environments for over a decade, and now works in conservation locally. Her observational skills, honed by years of ecological fieldwork, led to her multi-media artistic pursuits most recently with an emphasis on printmaking. She is passionate about the importance of art and science for understanding our world and being a well-rounded community member.
Cheryl believes whole-heartedly that art is for everyone and as a instructor and volunteer she strives to help make art experiences accessible to our community. This drive became especially motivating to her during the pandemic shutdown. She started the Friday Night Art Club in 2023, and completed Oregon Coast Council for the Arts’ “Teaching Artist Preparation (TAP)” program in 2024. Since graduating from TAP, Cheryl has been presenting art classes for adults and children at the Newport Visual Arts Center. Cheryl will bring in examples of and discuss her recent artwork at March’s gathering.
