Embrace the unpredictable nature of plein air painting! Painting outdoors is a delightful way to immerse your senses and live in the moment. Also, it is an exercise in relinquishing control and rewriting expectations.

This class is designed as an introduction to both plein air and oil painting; no previous experience is necessary. Each student will be provided with a chair and a makeshift box of materials for painting in oils that will serve as a lap-easel. Expect to be flexible, standing or sitting with materials on your lap. There could be rain, mosquitoes, sun in your eyes, and all manner of unpredictable elements!

As a group, led by the instructor’s demonstration, we will paint three small studies to explore the nature of oil paint and different ways to capture the natural world around us. One will focus on a broad impression, one on how to depict a tree, and another on an up-close specimen. After this, each student will be provided with a small panel to create a painting of their choice. Students will leave with their studies and final painting.

All class materials will be provided. Please bring a hat, layers, comfortable shoes, snacks/lunch, and water. Please note: There IS a bathroom and shelter at the preserve, but there is no running water, garbage collection, or electricity.

To help ensure an enjoyable experience for all, we kindly encourage guests to attend fragrance-free in support of those with allergies and sensitivities.
