Now in its 12th year in the historic seacoast town setting of Astoria, the Astoria Music Festival has grown to a widely-praised regional summer festival that draws stellar internationally-acclaimed artists to perform varied and often challenging programs, for enthusiastic and growing audiences.
The 2014 Astoria Music Festival takes place June 13-29, under the leadership of artistic director Keith Clark. This year’s festival presents 26 professional operatic, instrumental, and educational events. Along with the public concerts, the festival sponsors an Apprentice Program for advanced young instrumentalists and opera singers from around the U.S. and beyond. Festival concerts are held in the historic Liberty Theater, Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center, historic churches in Astoria, and local restaurants.
The uniqueness of the Astoria Music Festival lies in the top caliber of its performances, and the creative programming from the traditional to the eclectic, all presented with a refreshing friendliness and vitality that attracts a broad audience.
The essence of the Astoria Music Festival can be summed up in the closing event in the 2012 season: a production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, set in Astoria with a cast that included local bar pilots, Lewis and Clark, and a pirate!
The Astoria Music Festival now produces Oregon’s most varied summer program of classical music, and is the state’s only summer opera. In each 17-day festival, the diverse events can range from kid concerts and puppet theater, to dance and classic silent films with live accompaniment, to concerts by chamber ensembles and symphony orchestra, all the way to operas with casts led by internationally acclaimed opera stars. The annual performing roster also includes professional singers and instrumentalists from major opera companies and symphony orchestras around the world.
