PAINTING THE FIGURE

In this six week class students will be taught the basics of painting the human figure, including fundamental color theory and mixing, brush technique, rendering light and shadow, and understanding human anatomy. We will work primarily with watercolor both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, but students are welcome to work in other mediums if they prefer as long as they bring in their own material. All instruction will be done in watercolor including demonstrations and warm-up exercises. The central 2 hours of each class will be dedicated to making one painting. We will alternate between working from photo reference and live nude models.

Jordan Essoe is an award-winning artist who has exhibited internationally. Primarily a painter and performance artist, his practice expanded to include film, playwriting, and journalism. His work has been covered by NPR, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. He was born in Los Angeles County, raised in the California mountains, and currently lives on the central coast of Oregon.
